Nanostructures in Nature

Our researchers have given us insight on how nature has helped their work with nanotechnology. In our researcher series (coming soon to Youtube!), we learned about nanomaterials in the living system of nature, and how scientists like Dr. Sang E. Han examine the properties and potential uses of these nanostructures.

Below, you will see images of a beetle and it’s exterior at the nanoscale. These were provided to us by Dr. Han as he explained how naturally occurring structures, such as a beetles wings have helped with research regarding the development of solar cells.

We know that nature is capable of producing an abundance of complex nanoscale structures. Our researchers are taking this knowledge and using it as a model to manufacture solar cells at the nanoscale. Their work has lead to many research breakthroughs; including efficient light trapping techniques, flexibility, and increased strength.
